The new Amazon Kindle Fire HD Tablet doesn't have a positronic type R phase discriminating amplifier so I think I'll pass (Data's brain from Star Trek: TNG).

Rumor has it the Microsoft Surface Tablet will launch at the end of October for $199. That means every unit sold would be a loss for Microsoft; they'd hope to make up the difference in sales of other things (apps, etc.). The same is done with Xbox and games, and I believe often with printers and ink (I think Kodak was trying to go the other way and failed - to charge more for the printer and less for the ink, which over the long run would be cheaper for consumers... but we're stupid).

Innings Limit - 2 Cents

Stephen Strasburg on the Washington Nationals is supposedly going to be "shut down" for the season after reaching an innings limit. Why wouldn't managers just pitch him every 6th or 7th game so he's still in peak mental and physical shape for the playoffs?

Two headlines on Yahoo: 1) "U.S. economic growth slows to 1.5" (FYI, the US is still 3 times larger than China and 1.5x even after adjusting for buying power), and 2) "Facebook revenue growth skids, shares plunge" (They earned even more than last year but that's not good enough. Sell! Sell! Sell!).

Do people understand that you can't always grow by the same percentage forever?

Rick Reilly has been showing over the last year or so exactly what made him such a celebrated writer. It's like he turned on a good-writing switch. Or got past some personal problems or whatever. Insightful, funny, positive, sarcastic. Well done, Rick!

CNN.com Steve Jobs File System Article

I remember being sad when I first read this. Reminded of it today. Loss of knowledge about file systems, when people didn't even understand them in the first place, is a bad thing. Steve Jobs is exactly right that the learning curve is vertical when it comes to learning file systems. Doesn't mean we should give up on learning them. We should make them more intuitive. Using iTunes as an example of an app that controls the file structure for you is a terrible example! There is no more difficult system to learn than that useless organization system.

There are no undefeated Major League teams after 5 games. Best I could tell from 30 seconds of research was that 3 teams went 4-0 before losing: the NY Mets, Detroit, and Arizona.
